Patient Care Philosophy

Over his many years of caring for cancer patients in Lane County, Dr. Stew Buchanan has always tried to keep patient quality of life a central part of his practice style. Although he has scaled back and now focuses exclusively on patients with non-cancerous blood disorders, quality of life considerations are still of utmost importance.

“Any medical intervention, whether that be testing or imaging or procedures, has potential risks and benefits. Taking the time to discuss upsides and downsides of different options with respect to helping people live better, is an essential part of any patient visit” he says.

Beyond that, Dr. Buchanan highly appreciates the privilege of meeting new patients and family members and learning more about them and their life stories. “I like to get to know them,” he says, “not just their medical problems."
