Patient Care Philosophy

As a breast surgical oncologist, Dr. Sara Cartwright is dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based care for individuals facing breast cancer and breast health concerns. Her goal is to ensure every patient feels informed, supported, and empowered throughout their treatment journey through relationships built on trust, respect, and shared decision-making.

Before pursuing medicine, Dr. Cartwright worked as a registered nurse, an experience that continues to shape her approach to patient care today. Her years at the bedside reinforced the importance of communication, empathy, and advocacy, helping her create an environment where patients feel heard, understood, and prepared for the road ahead.

One of the most rewarding aspects of her work is helping patients understand their diagnosis and treatment options. Dr. Cartwright is passionate about providing education and guidance so patients can make informed decisions that align with their values, goals, and personal preferences. She believes every patient deserves to feel confident in their treatment plan and supported throughout the decision-making process.

Dr. Cartwright completed a Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the University of Southern California following General Surgery Residency training at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She is board-certified in General Surgery and is committed to advancing the field through research, education, and collaboration. As a member of the multidisciplinary team at Oregon Surgical Wellness and Willamette Valley Cancer Institute, she is dedicated to providing specialized, patient-centered breast cancer care to the community.

Personal Information

Dr. Cartwright's path to surgery began while she was a medical student assisting with an emergent colon cancer case. The experience solidified her desire to become a surgeon and inspired a career focused on combining scientific expertise with compassionate patient care.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Cartwright enjoys spending time with her husband and young son. A longtime swimmer, she still finds contentment in an early morning lap swim. Having grown up in the Bay Area, she developed a lifelong appreciation for the Pacific Coast and the mountains. When she isn't caring for patients, she enjoys road trips, camping, hiking, and exploring the outdoors with her family.
